Mentoring is important in educational and business environments. In as much has its benefits are clear, it is sad to note that few active mentors exist. There is need for more people to think of mentoring. It is a way of ensuring someone else becomes successful, or does better in an area you already passed through.
There are three areas in life where mentoring is needed. There is the academic type, the business and career section, and the personal development an improvement section. Academic success mentoring is the most formal. The educational institutions officially endorse relationships. This usually goes on for the time a student needs the help while still in school. The mentor shall do what they can to get the student in a better place to grasp what is taught, and to improve in class.
Mentoring for business or career success has a longer shelf life than the academic type. It allows for someone to seek it at any stage, not necessarily when they join college. Most of them start when a person is still in college, where they get a mentor through the school alumni. This is what makes up the bulk of mentors in programs such as the Honor Society, apart from approached professionals. They will take their time to show you what you need to do to succeed in the job you will get. The mentor will be in touch, to see how you are doing and to see where you could improve.
Personal development mentoring is usually covered in the attempts to better your academic and career prospects. The things you learn along the way help you become better. Qualities such as networking, discipline, and hard work shall be imparted along the way.
The best mentoring relationship is based on a distance between you and the mentor, where you do not report to them directly. The mentor should be someone who will not allow any level of complacency in you at all times. For every milestone you accomplish, they should let you aim for even more. You need to be comfortable interacting with them. You need to be open with them if any progress is to be made.
Your choice of a mentor should be governed by why you need one. They too should understand why they are helping you. While you work on achieving this; there has to be constant communication. As soon as you have made it through a given challenge, celebrate it with them, then set a higher challenge.
